Clay is the only natural substance that will retain a fingerprint upon impression. “You are significant” I told Miss______, a women who is serving life in with no parole in Denver Women’s Prison. Staring at the table she explained why she felt small and worthless. The mug she created resembled that aspect of who she believed she was. The larger mug represented her big heart.

We just finished teaching the 17th week of ceramic classes at Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. I began writing this wanting to try and share some of the things I am processing about this time I’ve spent with the offenders…The material is highly sensitive…and I’m not sure that words are big enough to contain the depth that we experience in this weekly 2 hour class.
