There is something so beautiful about seeing two cultures juxtaposed with each other. From noticing the difference in celebratory clothing, colors, symbolism, traditions, and food the differences present a dramatic range. In the case of an Indian-American wedding like Kip and Priya's, the cultures are not exactly side by side, instead they are becoming one. The wedded couple become one life, one body, and even one culture.
On Friday, the couple celebrated half of their marriage with a traditional Indian Tea ceremony. Flowers were flown in from India and every piece of the day brought an authentic cultural experience. Friday's henna was a appropriate reminder of the day prior as the guests celebrated a traditional American ceremony. I was fascinated to see the unique expressions the two cultures have in celebrating one of life's most significant commitments. After seeing the American wedding one day after the Indian, it made me respect our traditions in a new way and almost wish we had more of them. One of the strongest ties I saw in each celebration, though especially the Indian is the emphasis on family. The wedding was about much more than joining two people together, it was about showing gratitude and respect to elders as each family welcomed a new member into each others lives.
Now for Kip and Priya. As you can tell by this small feature of photos, the two are deeply joy-filled people. They are one of the kindest and happiest couples. Their love and commitment to not only each other, but their friends and family is one of the more obvious things you will notice about them upon meeting.
During the day of their ceremony, we really focused on being candid wedding photographers. We believe that photographing a wedding should be done in a way that documents so much more than what you look like, rather who you are and how you're feeling - giving you a set of authentic, natural wedding photographs. We want to give an heirloom that really help you re-live the this time of life. This family allowed us to document their personalities with ease.
