Couple's artistic engagement photos

Andy | Angela Every once in a while I get so excited about a documentation that I put everything off to edit it...today was one of those days. Yesterday afternoon Andy, Angela and I met downtown Denver to artistically document their connection. Major props to the couple for their clothing and color choices. The urban environment had limitless venues to enhance their style. Andy and Angela will be exchanging vows within 2011 at their photography themed wedding. You both are wonderful--I'm so excited to document your union.

Brad :: Christine This enchanting couple met on a blind double date almost a year ago from today. Obviously the date ended up working out well, but not as they had expected prior to their meeting. The two ended up clicking with each other more than the person they were with on the date. We met on a warm Tuesday in December at Denver's Washington Park to document their connection. When I asked Christine what her ideal engagement photos would look like, her only request was that the images looked like them. I think these candid engagement photos accomplished that and much more. I can't wait for the wedding! Be watching for more of Brad and Christine this summer.

Quentin | Angela Quentin had to work hard to win over Angela. During one of their first dates, Angela told Quentin that she would probably never get married. She envisioned herself as single forever and hoped to become a cat lady without any cats. Poor Quentin continued to call and drive across the state to visit his "friend." I think he could see right through her from the beginning. It didn't seem to take too long for Angie to realize that Quentin was great, and life with him would be far better than being the catless cat lady. Over the holiday, I was so thankful to document the engagement of a dear friend of mine. Angie and I played on a basketball team that traveled to Alaska. It didn't take long for our friendship to grow into many wonderful and ridiculous memories. These photos reflect my knowledge of Angela's willingness to do anything for a good laugh. They are so much fun and I am thankful Angela let Quentin find her.

a frosty winter engagement & police run in

Frosty Winter Engagement Shoot

These images are fresh off the engagement. Ashlie, Cody and I were able to catch each other five days after the proposal and 6 months after their introduction. The photo session took place at Ashlie's and my hometown, Ord, Nebraska. Ashlie and I have been close since our elementary days and every time we get together I recount the random ways we have encountered the world. I could make lists of momentous things we've walked through together. Needless to say, these images are very special and quite genuine. Here's to a story of energy, providence, connection, laughter and love.

That's all it took to get my approval. policeThough we didn't think there was anything harmful in Cody's Spiderman looking photo, the friendly police lady did. couple talking I wasn't sure if I would get in trouble for taking photos of this or not, but I was willing to push the boundaries for the hilarious photo opportunity. If there is one thing I have learned as a photojournalist, it's that the best stories are documented when you are not sure if you should be taking photos...and you must keep taking photographs until someone tells you that you can't. engagement ring The story behind the ring? I believe Cody gave her this when he proposed. engagement propThis is how Cody proposed. He gave Ashlie a journal and told her he wanted to write back and forth, or something of that sort. After flipping through the first few pages she obviously figured out there was a little more to the book than that. The beautiful ring is one of a kind, and specially made from Cody's mother's wedding ring.

country engagement documentation . chatfield

I met Stephanie and Phillip at Chatfield Botanical Gardens on Sunday to document their connection and engagement. The country theme fit these native Texans well. They are currently in their post graduate studies at the Denver Seminary. They crossed paths for a second time less than a year ago, yet their connection during this season of life was different. Stephanie and Phillip became best friends almost as quickly as they became engaged...some people just know.I loved being able to do this for you both. Many Blessings on the rest of your wedding preparation and engagement journey.

denver engagement photos

REI engagement session. "What is the strangest thing you have ever photographed a couple doing?" asked Rachel. "Wearing fake mustaches," I quickly replied. Though the strangest, also the best in my eyes. You both are so much fun and I can't wait until the wedding. Let me tell you a little about Aaron and Rachel, but words might ruin the story. Their personalities shine brightly through these photos. Where were these photos taken, you might wonder. Along the Platte river right next to REI it is. it features the best of all worlds. Backgrounds of brick and the urban sky along with a Colorado-like river rapids. You can swim here too--just see.

Rachel was telling me how taking photos was initially an awkward thing. To make things "less awkward" I told her how being photographed is kind of like going to the gynecologist. Though the person feels strange about it, the professional does stuff like this all the time...sometimes I think it's better if I just don't say anything. Cheesman Park engagment session

Aaron wanted some of just himself. Actually, I don't think he did, but I trust that you will enjoy this image anyway.

Some of our friends at Cheesman Park were playing a little background music to set the mood.

This one is my favorite. It changes the pace of your breathing. It takes the right couple for me to let them go without any prompting. Most don't quite know how to handle it. During this portion of the shoot I kept my mouth shut, waiting to see what would happen. This is all them :)

I feel like something funny happened at this point but I can't really remember. Possibly my "assistant" was asking for help? Alright guys, give me your best smiles! Yes, they were in the river with no shoes at the beginning of November.

My new assistant was following us around asking if we needed any help. Upon continual reassurance that we were fine, he asked to take a picture with me. I had Rachel take one too. I love a man with a disposable camera. You guys are really going to be surprised when he shows up at your wedding with me. Go ahead and add Jackie "plus one"

Rachel is from Wisconsin. If only we had cash on hand there would have been a brat in this image. And now for the "best of" section. These are wonderful. You both are great! I can't wait for the wedding! Let us know what you think? Review us on Yelp

bo . hannah | unique engagement photos

Unique engagement Photographs Yesterday I made a short jaunt to Chicago to photograph Hannah and Bo. It's important to plan well when traveling for a photo shoot; however, this trip was possibly one of the most random, unplanned adventures of my life. I left Denver with the time and address of the photo shoot written on a piece of paper, yet somehow I didn't get as far as planning out the Chicago public transportation. It took me about 20 minutes to lose my map, which greatly increased the day's adventure. I ran around the city with no clue what I would run in to. Fortunately, the day ended up divinely placing me where I needed to be, as if I had everything planned all along. Hannah, Bo and I met at Cantigny in Wheaton right as the sun was giving its last hours of light. Their love and expression needed little direction. These images are such a clear depiction of the couple's connection. Within the first three weeks of dating they knew they wanted to marry each other. Seven months later, here we are. engagment shoot, romantic photo

I don't think they knew I was photographing them here. I told them I was taking photos of Hannah's ring. These two images are about as natural as it gets. I love the color in this image. Bo mentioned several times that he would love to take a photo by the tanks. To Hannah's and my disdain, we did end up by the tanks taking photos. I willingly jumped on Bo's excitement and made him do something strange. After this I said, "Let's go find a bunch of roses or something more girly."

This image was taken while Hannah and Bo were walking. I probably could have done the whole photo shoot without saying a word and had many wonderful photos like this. Their expression and intimacy didn't need any prompting.

I think Bo was pointing out a hole in her sweater or something. Even their simplest exchanges are rich. The first time Bo and Hannah came to Cantigny they didn't quite grasp the area's fullness. Their picnic took place right next to the parking lot. The area was so beautiful. We could have spent the whole day finding lovely little areas to photograph.

...the energy in this one. Yes, please.

Whenever I look at this image I get this song click here by Foreigner stuck in my head. So please be entertained, click on the link, join me in my head and help me bring back the 80s one blog post at a time. Bo and Hannah will be getting married in Denver early next summer. I am so thankful that I get to be a part of your day.

matt . jenni : greenwood village

Greenwood Village Engagement Photographs Matt said that the guys at work gave him a hard time all week about coming to Colorado for engagement pictures after he got married. This was something Jenni & I enjoyed bringing up all morning. :) I was very excited to photograph them in Greenwood Village on a walking trail I use often. All of the trees were at their peak, yet the photos don't come close to justifying the vibrant colors and detail that turn before the season's change. I think the fall is so visually and symbolically full of beauty. Matt and Jenni--congrats on your engagement! Jenni should probably get another ring, right?

sunrise engagement session

Sunrise engagement session Out of all of the times I've taken photos I have never had the opportunity to experience the 6 a.m. sunlight before. Everyone says that it is one of the best times to shoot and now I see why. We arrived at the location before we could see without headlights, but the sun quickly came up and brought all sorts of color. A few of their favorite things was the theme for Teagan and Scott's engagement session. We circled around Lincoln's Haymarket doing a few of their favorite things. Playing games, eating ice cream, reading books and floating in the football game day sea of red. Scott and Teagan will be getting married in the spring, so yes, there will be more. :) This session is an Denver engagement photographers dream. Unique, Creative, Emotive, Personal. Showing who you are is what photojournalism is all about.

Mountain Engagement Session | Boetcher Mountain

Becca, Matt and I met at lookout mountain Monday evening as the sun was going down. Matt is a former Concordia Seward grad and Becca is in her last semester at CU. Their wedding is on New Years Eve in Denver. Matt's mom told me that I could take the night off early so I could have fun while offering to finish photographing for me with her point and shoot :). I am so excited to be a part of your day. You guys are so great.

Union Station engagement photographs

Union Station engagement photographs

These photos are a really great example of how images can turn in to heirlooms after only a few years. The newly renovated Union Station shown in this posting shows the dramatic change that time can make. When choosing the right location, I think it's important to think of going to spots that will show time. Having Union station engagement photographs like these, show much more than what you looked like when engaged. It's a bit of history to go along with your story. It sets the time and place and gives you a point of reference for what life what like.

Now for Heidi and Adam's session.

So Heidi and Adam aren't really dancers. Yet, I kept making them dance yesterday during their engagement session at Denver's Union Station. The movement revealed a wonderful connection between the two of you. I guarantee that your guests would be elated if you pulled out some of those moves during your first dance.

Heidi warned me that she may not be very photogenic...and well, if this isn't photogenic (i thought of about ten really bad comparisons, I'll spare you) then _______. I'm not sure if I have ever used the word stunning to describe anything I've documented, but I believe that stunning is a highly accurate description of these images. This is such beautiful love, and I can feel it through these stills. Thanks for letting us be a part of it.

best engagement session | denver

Best engagement session Can you think of something cuter? Flora, James and I met at one of their favorite places, Elitch Gardens to document their engagement session. It's full of fun, laughter, romance and uniqueness. This is pure photojournalism. This required little posing or directing--it was a pure treat for me. They not only are the cutest couple but tons of fun. Thank you James and Flora for allowing me to document your awesomeness.

Knowing that she was the answer before the question was stated, FloraJane said, “Where is the most unique place you’ve taken photos.” On the opening day of Elitch Gardens, I was reminded of why I love photography. Experiences with couples as genuine as James and FloraJane make this the best job in the world.  Thank you both for being so fully who you are. I think we told your story quite well :-) Their wedding will take place in Denver’s Washington Park in late September.

Urban Denver Engagement Photographer Katie and paul. Downtown Denver–a wonderful couple featuring hip, urban, chic and wintery engagement photography. This is the type of engagement session that I just love. There is so much color in the city buildings and many lines and shapes to frame the couple. Denver is awesome.

Watch for more of these two in September. I am so excited to be a part of your wedding day :)

Urban Winter Engagement Session

Bitter wind and 23 degrees is perfect weather for engagement photos right? Despite the cold, Peter, Charista and I had a lot of fun running around downtown Omaha last weekend. Peter and Charista are fellow concordia grads. Charista and I didn’t have as much of an opportunity to get to know each other but I have several fond memories of peter…like when he came in to my dorm and ate my hair products…many lengthy ridiculous and purposeless conversations… or the time he threw an ice filled snowball at my face. To Peter, we owe many brilliant spring weekend ideas and I must not forget the video that will some day make us famous. 223 hits!! I am so glad that I get to be a part of your day. expression, emotion and personality are some of my favorite things to capture and I know that there will be much of it to observe in july. picture by piano

You can't really do a Colorado engagement session well without visiting the mountains. Lookout Mountain is a location that sit's very close to the Denver metro area. You'll find a beautiful overlook of mountainous valley's within 30 minutes of the city. There are many other great spots you could visit for mountain engagement sessions in Colorado such as Loveland Pass, Kenoa Pass, Vail, Silverthorn or any other mountain town. However, I've found the perfect spot right outside of the city.

This shoot was so much fun. Best wishes on the rest of your planning! You guys are great!
